So, you want to start your own group!
There are a couple of steps which will start you on your way, but first, why start a user group?
- You always wanted a baby but couldn't stand changing diapers.
- You already have a baby but still you don't have enough to do.
- You want to network with like minded individuals.
- You want all your technical questions answered but have used up all your software vendors free support.
Startup Basics
- Make sure you are not trying to fill a niche the usergroup down the block has covered.
- Attend a few usergroup meetings in your area to see how things operate.
- Pick a cool name!
- Draw up a basic plan.
- Do you have a location? Find an organization that might sponsor your location.(local hall, church, hotel, etc.)
- How will you fill the meeting time?Are you going to provide quest speakers? etc.
- How will basic costs be covered? ie. handouts, snacks, meeting space, etc.
- Market your group through local Computer stores, the internet, schools, friends, local publications, etc.
- Setup an infrastructure/committee (this will answer a few of the above questions.)
- Figure a realistic budget.
- Create organization bylaws.
- Set member dues.
- Enstate presiding officers from enthusiastic members.
- Actively recruit new members.
- Plan topics weeks ahead.
- Get liability insurance.
- Always be courteous and professional.
